Snuggle Bees National Geographics

Traditionally, it's the birds and the bees that get all the attention—unless you're an entomologist. Then it's the bees and the bees, not to mention the flies and the wasps and the moths ... and, well, you get the picture. National Geographic Emerging Explorer Dino Martins gives us a look into the love lives of his favorite subjects. Most species of bees on the planet are solitary and not social like honeybees. Among the solitary species, females have nests to return to at night, but males have nowhere to go and end up sleeping on vegetation. Sometimes males will huddle together for warmth and comfort. Here are two different species of male bees, an Amegilla bee on the right and a long-horn bee (Tetraloniella) on the left, that have snuggled up together on a stalk of grass in a sheltered spot under an acacia tree. The photo was taken in Laikipia, Kenya.

Battle for the Elephants National Geographics ARTICLE

Battle for the Elephants  explores the brutal slaughter of African elephants for their tusks, fueled largely by China’s demand for ivory. The film tells the ultimate wildlife story — how the Earth’s most charismatic and majestic land animal today faces market forces driving the value of its tusks to levels once reserved for precious metals. Journalists Bryan Christy and Aidan Hartley take viewers undercover as they investigate the criminal network behind ivory’s supply and demand. In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, one of the world’s main ports for smuggled ivory, Hartley attempts to buy large quantities of tusks from poachers. In China, Christy explores the thriving industry of luxury goods made from ivory and the ancient cultural tradition of ivory carving. The film is based in part on an article by Christy, published in the October 2012 issue of National Geographic magazine , titled 'Blood Ivory.' Since the opening up of the Chinese market and the growth of its econ...

Why Wild Animals Are Moving Into Cities, And What To Do About It

Global warming and environmental destruction are driving coyotes, bears and mountain lions out of their habitats, but that's only part of the reason why so many animals call the city home. By John Mahoney Posted 12.19.2012 at 9:01 am It’s been a while since he tried to count them all, but Stan Gehrt estimates that more than 2,000 coyotes make a comfortable living in the Chicago metropolitan area today. And in the 12 years he’s spent tracking the animals with radio and GPS collars, Gehrt, a wildlife ecologist at Ohio State University, has witnessed some remarkable adaptations. Suburban coyotes, like the pack in a residential area a few miles from O’Hare airport, have learned to live in much smaller territories than they do in rural places. Downtown coyotes, which roam among the towers and traffic of the Chicago Loop, thrive in the city by hunting enough small rodents to feed themselves and their young. Some urban coyotes have even been spotted crossing streets in ...

Endangered Animals in Europe

Among Europe's 1,000 species of native mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, 155 are classified as threatened. Conservation experts warn there's an extremely high chance that 16 of the endangered animals will soon be extinct. Many of Europe's most endangered animals are species restricted to islands, notably the Canary Islands. Continental Europe is not, however, without severely threatened animals. Bavarian Pine Vole, for example, went extinct in Germany sometime after 1962 and now its last remaining population survives precariously in Austria. The information here comes from the World Conservation Union (IUCN), an internationally recognized authority on the status of species around the world. IUCN has recently completed detailed assessments of the health of Europe's mammal, reptile and amphibian populations. Meanwhile, Birdlife International provides IUCN with data on the status of European birds. The animal assessments cover the continent of Eur...

Asteroid buzzes, misses Earth _ unlike meteor

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A 150-foot asteroid hurtled through Earth 's backyard Friday, coming within an incredible 17,150 miles and making the closest known flyby for a rock of its size. In a chilling coincidence, a meteor exploded above Russia just hours before the asteroid zoomed past the planet. Scientists the world over, along with NASA , insisted the meteor had nothing to do with the asteroid since they appeared to be traveling in opposite directions. The asteroid is a much more immense object and delighted astronomers in Australia and elsewhere who watched it zip harmlessly through a clear night sky. "It's on its way out," reported Paul Chodas of NASA's Near-Earth Object program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. Asteroid 2012 DA14, as it's called, came closer to Earth than many communication and weather satellites orbiting 22,300 miles up. Scientists insisted these, too, would be spared, and they were right. The asteroi...

Anacondas Facts and Pictures National Geographic

The green anaconda is the largest snake in the world , when both weight and length are considered. It can reach a length of 30 feet (9 meters) and weigh up to 550 pounds (227 kilograms). To picture how big that is, if about five ten-year-olds lie down head to foot, they'd be about the length of this huge snake. And it'd take about 11 kids to weigh as much as one anaconda. Green Anaconda Pics,Anaconda National Geographics,Anaconda facts These snakes can be as big around as a grown man. They have some giant relatives, too.The green anaconda is a member of a family of snakes called constrictors. Constrictors are not venomous snakes. They don't kill prey by delivering venom through a bite. Instead, constrictors wrap their bodies around their prey and squeeze until it stops breathing. The giant snake opens its mouth wide enough to swallow its victim—sometimes fish or caiman (relatives of crocodiles) and even jaguars and small deer. Anaconda jaws are hel...

Shell’s Eco-marathon Americas Competition

Teams from 30 universities and 18 high schools from the United States and Canada – including the first all girls team — met in Houston for Shell’s Eco- marathon Americas competition on April 16 and 17 to show that it is possible to create cars that use less fuel. The teams proved this by slow-speed racing their homemade vehicles. Shante Stowell (left) and Semira Kern of Granite Falls High School share a cheer in their pit area in the George R. Brown Convention Center while teammate Pooja Sethi smiles. The all-girls team from Washington’s Granite Falls High School had high hopes for their lime green vehicle, the Iron Maiden, but technical problems denied them their fuel economy goal of 678 miles per gallon (288 kilometers per liter), which would have broken the 26-year-old  program’s previous record for diesel vehicles. Instead, they ran at 378 mpg (161 km/l) and received a special award for safety in vehicle design, construction and onsite behavior. See the ...

It rose out of the tropical Pacific in late 1997

It rose out of the tropical Pacific in late 1997, bearing more energy than a million Hiroshima bombs. By the time it had run its course eight months later, the giant El Niño of 1997-98 had deranged weather patterns around the world , killed an estimated 2,100 people, and caused at least 33 billion [U.S.] dollars in property damage.   Weekly Pacific Ocean Temperatures   Isaias Ipanaqué Silva knew none of that. All he and the other peasant farmers in the Peruvian hamlet of Chato Chico could see was that after weeks of incessant rain the adjacent Piura River had not stopped rising. The rainfall itself was no surprise. Every three to seven years, for as long as anyone could remember, the same rainfall had arrived after a pool of hot seawater the size of Canada appeared off the west coast of the Americas. The ocean would heat up right around Christmastime, so fishermen called the phenomenon El Niño, for the Christ Child. Then t...

World Dangerous animals National Geographic

By Jennifer S. Holland Photograph by Mattias Klum Michael decided to go for a swim. He was on vacation with his family in Guerrero, Mexico, and it was hotter than blazes. He grabbed his swimming trunks from where they’d been drying on a chair, slid them on, and jumped into the pool. Instead of cool relief, a burning pain ripped through the back of his thigh. Tearing off his trunks, he leaped naked from the pool, his leg on fire. Behind him a small, ugly, yellow creature was treading water. He scooped it into a Tupperware container, and the caretaker of the house rushed him to the local Red Cross facility, where doctors immediately identified his attacker: a bark scorpion, Centruroides sculpturatus, one of the most venomous species in North America. The fierce pain from a sting is typically followed by what feels like electric shocks racking the body. Occasionally victims die. Luckily for Michael (who asked me not to give his full name), the bark sc...
