One of the greatest problem with car
to is finding somewhere to put them. Renault concept car, the matra
zoom, gets around this problem by making itself smaller, trucking its
rear wheels under itself for parking and stretching them out again for
the open road.
Other
manufacturer have turned to electronics. Volkswagen concept car , the
futura is fitted with laser and ultrasound sensor to measure the space
and to park the car.
Route planner will linked to a central computer will guide the driver. In a strange area , the planners will suggest the best. At home, where routes are familiar, they will warn of road works, congestion and accidents. System like these have already been tested and could be common within about five years. The dashboard of the future will be designed to provide lots of clear information.
Speed, fuel level, and warning of danger ahead may be shown as head displays, on the screen close to driver line of sight.
On board computer will control many parts of car, including the suspension and anti lock brakes. Communication link will provide driver information.
Once on motor way , cars will be driven automatically a few meter apart using sensors to prevent crashes. This technique called platooning and the already tested in California is safer and make much better use of roads.
